Local bridges closed to vehicles

Local bridges closed to vehicles

We have made the decision to permanently close five local bridges to traffic, as part of our commitment to reduce traffic cutting through local streets and improve local neighbourhoods for the people who live there.

Vehicles cannot drive across:

  • Salters Bridge in Gosforth
  • Castle Farm Road, next to Jesmond Dene
  • Haldane Bridge in South Jesmond
  • Argyle Street bridge in Ouseburn
  • Stoneyhurst Road Bridge in South Gosforth

This has allowed us to re-allocate the road space for walking and cycling, both as part of our response to the pandemic and in line with government’s expectations of councils and local policies to promote active travel.

More information about why we have done this is can be found in our news story about bridge closures.

A public consultation about the bridge closures ended on February 15 2021.

Information on this process is available on our Safe Newcastle Bridges consultation page.

We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to respond to the consultation process.

Delegated decisions

The bridges have been closed permanently under a process known as delegated decision.

Please see the notice for each bridge:

As part of the formal legal process public notices confirming this decision will be put up.

We appreciate that there will be varied views on these decisions and hope that the information provided within the documents shows that we have considered different views in reaching this outcome.
