Out of hours emergencies - environmental health and trading standards

We provide a limited service to respond to emergency or urgent issues that cannot wait until the next working day. Workplace accidents, and issues that have significant impact on public health may be passed to an officer for immediate attention up until midnight. The sort of issues we will respond to are:

  • noise complaints concerning alarms and weekend or night-time construction site noise
  • serious workplace injuries or fatalities
  • major food poisoning or other outbreaks of human or animal disease
  • some serious acute pollution incidents

Although each caller may feel that their call is an emergency, it may well be that the incident can be dealt with by giving advice or being investigated on the next working day. Such issues as noise from a neighbour will often be dealt with in this way. It is an emergency service so should not be used simply to log complaints. Duty officers are 'on call' from their homes.

Please call 0191 278 7878.

An operator will take your name, address, telephone number and the details of the complaint and will contact the duty officer. The duty officer will make an assessment and if necessary telephone you to give advice and/or arrange a visit. For most noise complaints, and complaints concerning housing, details of the issue will be recorded and allocated to an officer to contact you the next working day.
