Cycle route 4
We are continuing to carry out improvements to the cycle route on Great North Road, between Broadway East and West and Brunton Lane.
You can view the plan here
Resurfacing works programme from 10 June which will last for approximately 2 weeks.
In order to carry out the works safely and efficiently, they will be carried out under temporary road and lane closures, Monday to Sunday nights inclusive, between 7pm and 7am
Signed diversion routes will be in place during this time with contraflow arrangements introduced on Great North Road for the use of residents, buses and emergency vehicles only. We have constructed a carriageway crossover on Great North Road which will allow more access / egress routes for residents and for bus services to continue to operate during the works. However, there will be occasions when some properties will be affected by the closures with no access or egress during the hours of 7pm and 7am.

May 2019 update
Over recent weeks the focus of the work on the scheme has been around the junction of Polwarth Drive, and the entrance to the service road northbound from Great North Road. Work on the surfacing on the entrances to McCracken Close, Inglewood, Fencer Court, Greystoke Park and Fencer Hill Park has also been undertaken. The majority of this work has now been completed, though there are some minor finishing off and remedial works that will take place in the next couple of weeks.
The focus of the next phase of works will be carriageway resurfacing that will take place in various locations along the length of the Great North Road itself from Broadway Roundabout to Brunton Lane. This resurfacing will enable the completion of the cycle route as well as generally improving the condition of the carriageway on the Great North Road.
This resurfacing phase of the works will be carried out in sections along the Great North Road from 7pm until 7am and will take at least two weeks. There will be diversions in place while the work is carried out.
Planning of this work is continuing and when a start date has been confirmed there will be further communication to ensure residents and people travelling through the area are aware of the details including details on diversions and impact on bus services.
Preparation to enable us to do the resurfacing work such as footway, kerbing, drainage works and removal of some existing road markings is taking place now and over the next couple of weeks.
This preparation will include constructing a carriageway crossover on the Great North Road to allow for traffic diversions during the resurfacing works. Alongside this we will also be undertaking temporary enabling work at some junctions including the removal / shortening of kerbed islands.
These works will aid in minimising the disruption caused by the upcoming resurfacing by allowing more routes for residents to access / egress their homes and for bus services to continue to operate during the forthcoming works.
