Cllr Joyce McCarty

First elected to the council in 1994, Joyce is a retired Children’s Services school improvement officer, following a career as a teacher.

Joyce’s portfolio is focussed on investment in and the promotion of Newcastle, including our own major projects and capital
programme.

She is also responsible for creating quality jobs and ensuring that everyone can benefit from jobs being created.

She ensures the Council works in the interests of fairness with her portfolio including key issues like fair pay policy, equalities and financial inclusion.  In June 2021, the role was extended so  she now has responsibility for promoting apprenticeships and promoting the living wage.

Responsibilities

The role of Cabinet member for Inclusive Economy includes:

    - Local Development Framework
     
  • Regional economic functions
     
  • City centre retail and diversification
     
  • Co-operative Council agenda
     
  • Promoting social inclusion and cohesion
    - Embedding Fairness Commission principles
    - Fair pay policy
    - Financial inclusion
     
  • Welfare Reform
     
  • Asylum Seekers and Refugees
    - City of Sanctuary
