The Urban Design and Conservation Team is the archaeology, conservation, heritage, interpretation, urban design, public art and historic building service of the City Council. The team members are involved in;

  • caring for the city's listed buildings, scheduled monuments and conservation areas
  • managing its ancient monuments and heritage assets
  • maintaining its archaeological records, developing its heritage and ensuring that the historic environment is a vital part of the regeneration of the city.

  • Responsible for and manages the Historic Environment Section
  • Responsible for ensuring that conservation, historic buildings and archaeology are a high priority of the Council
  • Deals with strategic issues and co-ordinates major projects and reports
  • Provides advice and assistance to all the Tyne and Wear Districts on any issues to do with the  industrial heritage of the area

  • Examine planning applications throughout Tyne and Wear to determine whether they are archaeologically sensitive and recommend where works are required
    • Jennifer: Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, North Tyneside
      Claire: Applications affecting Hadrian's Wall, Gateshead and South Tyneside
  • Responsible for the management and development of the Tyne & Wear Historic Environment Record
  • Recommend where archaeology might be found or disturbed by proposed building or development.
  • Help members of the public, schoolchildren and students who have questions about the archaeology of Tyne and Wear

  • Promotes the conservation, enhancement and enjoyment of the city's heritage and historic environment
  • Administers and manages conservation grant schemes
  • Prepares policy documents and informative literature
  • Provides guidance and advice to owners and occupiers on appropriate works to Grade II listed and other unlisted buildings in the Central Conservation Area
  • Provides general built heritage conservation guidance and advice to internal City Council departments and external organisations
  • Co-ordinates heritage events such as Heritage Open Days

  • Advise on proposals relating to listed and locally listed buildings, non-listed buildings within Conservation Areas, and proposals within Historic Parks and Gardens
  • Responsible for preparing, surveying and monitoring of Heritage Assets at Risk
  • Undertake reviews of the Local List of buildings, structures, parks, gardens and open spaces
  • Simon also administers the Commemorative Plaque Scheme and develops heritage interpretation/projects
