Tyne Bridge inspection works

Detailed inspection works which required road closures on the Tyne Bridge took place over 2022, this part of the programme is now complete.

 

Inspection programme 2022

19 - 30 September

No traffic management required for the final stages of the inspection works

12 - 16 Sep

  • Hillgate, Gateshead - Lane Closure 8am to 4.30pm

5  - 8 Sep

  • Quayside lane closure (4-way temporary traffic signals)  9.30am to 3.30pm 

30 Aug - 2 Sep

  • Quayside lane closure (4-way temporary traffic signals)  9.30am to 3.30pm 

Aug 22 - 26

  • Tyne bridge (A167) A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling.

Aug 15-19 

  • Tyne bridge (A167) A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling.

Aug 8 - 12 UPDATED 

  • Tyne Bridge (A167) northbound inside lane closed from 8pm until 6am on 8 August only
  • Tyne Bridge (A167) southbound inside lane closed from 9.30 until 3.30 from 8-9 Aug. 
  • A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling.

Aug  3-5

  •  Tyne Bridge (A167) , southbound inside lane closed , 9.30am to 3.30pm from 3- 5 Aug
  •  A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling.

July 25 -  28

  • Four-way traffic lights will be in place on Church Street for four nights between 8pm and 5.30am. This is to allow access for the mobile inspection platforms.
  • There will also be one northbound inside lane closure on the Tyne Bridge on July 25 between 7.30pm and 5.30am.  A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling.

 

July 21-22 Tyne Bridge

From 9.30am until 3.30pm there will be a closure of:

  • a southbound lane of the road
  • the footway on the east side of the bridge

A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling during these periods.

 

July 18 -  21

  • Overnight closure on Queen St - Lombard St from 8pm until 5.30 am for four nights

 

July 11- 14

From 9.30am until 3.30pm there will be a closure of:

  • a southbound lane of the road
  • the footway on the east side of the bridge

This is to allow engineers to continue to fully inspect the steelworks during daylight hours. Internal inspections will also take place on the Tyne Bridge towers.

A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling during these periods.

 

July 4 to 8

From 9.30am until 3.30pm there will be a closure of:

  • a southbound lane of the road
  • the footway on the east side of the bridge

This is to allow engineers to continue to fully inspect the steelworks during daylight hours. 

A shared footway will remain open for people walking and cycling during these periods.

27 June to 1 July

Inspection of the arch steelwork above the main bridge deck.

There will be:

  • lane closures from 8pm
  • a full road closure across the Tyne Bridge from 10pm to 6am

People on foot and cyclists will still be able to cross using the footway on the west side of the bridge.

Please also note that the Great North Run sign will be put up during this week, with lane closures in each direction from 8pm, ahead of the full closure.
