On behalf of the people of Newcastle, the council would also like to extend sincere condolences to members of the Royal Family.

Many people will hold fond memories of the Duke of Edinburgh’s visits to the city, and generations of young people have benefitted from their involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, which will continue to be enjoyed by many more.

As a mark of respect, Civic flags are being flown at half-mast.

The City of Newcastle upon Tyne will be observing the official period of mourning for eight days. During this time the city will be respecting the wishes of the Palace.

The city will also be observing a two-minute silence at 11am on the day of the funeral.
