Council estate celebrates its 100th birthday

Hexham Avenue estate in Walker is celebrating its 100th anniversary this month.

The community celebrated the anniversary by hosting a carnival party.

Wor Hoose, a community project based in the area, celebrated the 100th birthday of the estate by hosting a carnival party for those who live in the area.

Newcastle City Council bought the land that would become Hexham Avenue in July 1919 after the Addison Act gave money to local councils to build housing.

The first families then moved into the estate on Allendale Terrace and Tweedy Terrace in 1922. Weekly rents at the time ranged from 12 to 19 shillings (£1.44 to £2.28).

The community event brought together local people, families and their neighbours to participate in a range of activities including arts and crafts, sports, and a cream tea party. An exhibition was also on display showing the local history and ancestry of the estate.

The event was funded by Brambledown Landscape Services, a contractor working in Walker on behalf of Your Homes Newcastle (YHN). Brambledown decided to support the celebrations after YHN put the two organisations in touch.

David Langhorne, Assets and Development director at Your Homes Newcastle said: “Events like these are a great example of the importance of community hubs and projects within our neighbourhoods and the work they do to bring communities together.

“It’s great to be able to help events such as this come to life by forging links between community projects and our local contractors.

“Council housing has made an important contribution to our city and celebrating 100 years of Hexham Avenue allows us to reflect on the history of the estate and a chance to look forward at the council housing and the communities it creates.”

Liz Coates from Wor Hoose Newcastle said: “Our residents and tenants group has worked hard to help organise the 100th birthday celebrations and the kind donation from Brambledown Landscape ltd meant we could provide free food, refreshments games and arts and crafts activities.

“The birthday party was a chance for residents to have fun, get creative and reminisce over past times while mixing with their neighbours and making new friends.”

Paul Curry, director of Brambledown Landscape Ltd said: “We have had the privilege of carrying out significant environmental improvement works in Walker over the past 45 years and are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile community project event.

“Wor Hoose enhances the social, educational and economic welfare of residents within the Hexham Avenue housing estate and surrounding areas, and we are proud to offer our support in celebrating 100 years of the estate.”

This year Newcastle is celebrating 100 years of council housing with a range of exhibitions, talks and film screenings across the city.
