The visit to the Children’s Education and Skills service was specifically focused on the ‘Front Door’ service, the arrangements that are in place to respond to an initial contact from a professional or member of the public who is concerned about a child.

Inspectors commented that “children in need of help and protection receive a response that is timely and proportionate and improves their situation” and that “children’s lived experiences are well considered, leading to informed and effective interventions.”

They also stated that there is an “aspirational culture” embedded within the service which has been “created by the senior leadership team and lead portfolio holder, who strive to be the best children’s service they can be.” The team demonstrated that they had a “strong grip where improvements are needed and have plans in place to take these forwards.”

Cllr Lesley Storey, Cabinet Member for a Growing City, Newcastle City Council said: “I am proud to hear the positive feedback from inspectors about the hard work and positive attitude of our team who deliver ‘front’ door’ services to support and protect our children and their families. These visits are a welcome opportunity to consistently review the great work our team do to ensure all children receive the support they need at the right time and in the right way.”

Front door services are the vital first contact step where professionals gather information and make decisions about which pathways to follow for different contacts and referrals. This may lead to an assessment by children’s social care, early help or a response from universal services.

Ofsted will take the findings from this focused visit into account when planning the next inspection or visit.
