Black History Month 2023

Black History Month 2023

Black History Month 2023

This year, the theme for Black History Month is 'Saluting our Sisters.’

“Black History Month will be dedicated to honouring the achievements of black women who are often the forgotten heroines. We want to amplify their voices and challenge the systems that oppress them. As we celebrate the continued achievements and contributions of Black people to the North East, the UK, and the rest of the world, we also need to consider how we're creating change for the future.”

Island Movements

two ballet dancers performing outdoors

This year, we are thrilled to be hosting a performance by Black British Ballet at City Library on Monday 9th October at 1pm.

Island Movements is a short ballet that tells the story of Windrush and explores the impact of this generation’s experiences on their families, communities and society. Beginning with a young Caribbean soldier in WW2 Britain, this moving tale follows him and his family through their life in the UK up to the current Windrush scandal.

The show will be followed by a Q&A with the dancers and creators.

Book your ticket on Eventbrite.

Please note: Tickets for the public are limited as this performance will also be attended by a local school group.
