St Cuthbert's Catholic High School

Gretna Road

Newcastle upon Tyne

NE15 7PX

Required from September 2024

St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School is looking to recruit, an enthusiastic and talented Head of Mathematics, who has a passion for mathematics and the drive to promote and inspire a love for, and excellence in this subject for all pupils and students. We are looking for someone who understands how important mathematics are to future success both in school and beyond. Moreover, we are looking for someone who believes that “mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding” (Thurston).

This is a unique opportunity to be instrumental in the continued development of our mathematics department and in the life of our school. Mathematics is an essential part of a St Cuthbert’s education with high numbers of candidates choosing to study Advanced Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics in our Sixth Form. In recent years over 30% of all students in our Sixth Form study Advanced Level mathematics. The successful candidate will lead a department of highly qualified subject specialists and will require the necessary skills and experience to develop the practice of staff within the department by providing leadership, motivation, and training. St Cuthbert's is committed to staff development and this important middle leadership role would suit a candidate wishing to progress to a senior leadership post in the future.

This role should appeal both to candidates seeking their first significant leadership post, or to more experienced candidates already in a leadership role, looking for a new challenge and an opportunity to develop mathematics in an 11-18 setting.

Above all, we are looking for someone who will help our boys become great men, leading by example, raising their aspirations and achievement, and inspiring them to a love of mathematics.

This is an opportunity to join an impressive, all-boys Catholic School that has enjoyed a reputation as a centre of educational excellence for over one hundred and forty years.
