Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) is a major regional museum, art gallery and archives service managing a collection of nine museums and galleries across Tyneside and the Archives for Tyne and Wear.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join this award-winning service and to work alongside our creative teams; we are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and dedicated Facility Assistant to work as part of our Front of House team based at the Laing Art Gallery, Shipley Art Gallery and Hatton Gallery.

This is a practical, varied, hands on role. The successful applicant will contribute to the general security of the buildings, opening and closing buildings and carry out daily health and safety checks to ensure safety of both visitors and staff. You must be physically able to carry out the duties of the position involving moving and carrying, setting up furniture for talks, boardroom meetings and school classes and be able to move around a large building.

You will also undertake some art handling, installing and packing paintings and objects as part of the galleries’ exhibition programme and general maintenance of displays. You will be able to use basic hand tools and work with care and attention to detail.

You must be willing to work to a roster pattern with regular weekend working with some additional hours for events and private hire.

Applicants should have basic numeracy, literacy and IT skills and be willing to undertake training in accordance with the role.

Some experience of a customer-facing role will be beneficial, but not necessary for applying, as the post holder will also be expected to give general advice to visitors and assist with emergency evacuations.

Further details about the role and the essential criteria needed by prospective candidates are detailed in the accompanying job description and person specification.
