What will I be doing?

Your will be based at Newcastle City Council Green recycling centre at Sandhills Depot in Newburn.

The arboriculture team within Local Services provide a wide range of tree maintenance services across Newcastle City Councils, Open spaces, Highways and Housing. You will be carrying out tree work throughout Newcastle.

As an apprentice you will be learning on the job whilst being mentored by our qualified experienced staff. You will gain knowledge to enable you to climb trees, prune trees, and fell trees. You will be trained in using a variety of arboricultural plant, climbing equipment, and chainsaws. Recognise a basic range of tree and shrub species using common and scientific names. Identify pests, diseases, disorders and tree defects. Perform an aerial rescue of colleague from a rope and harness and work safely at height in the tree under supervision

What will I need?

<ul>

<li>GCSE grade 9-2 / A-E (or equivalent) in Maths &amp; English or the ability to achieve this determined though an assessment by the training provider. </li>

<li>Ability to work successfully both individually and as part of a team.</li>

<li>Capable of working at height. </li>

<li>Be physically fit and active</li>

<li>The ability to work outside in all weather conditions</li>

</ul>

You will need to be over 18 years of age

We&rsquo;ll support you to learn new skills, and to thrive in your role, undertaking level 2 apprenticeship Qualification in Arboriculture .This would be achieved by attending east Durham College on a day release basis.

The role is full time (37 hours per week) for a fixed term of 18 months.

At Newcastle City Council our apprentices are paid a percentage of the salary for the role the apprentice is working towards. This is always at least National Minimum Wage and increases each year as you develop your knowledge and skills.

This apprenticeship role is working towards the full role of Arborist (N5 grade starting salary £26,873)

In Year one you will be paid 60&#37; of the salary rate, or NMW, whichever is higher.

In Year two you will be paid 65&#37; of the salary rate or NMW, whichever is higher.

Whilst we are unable to guarantee a post in the role apprentices work towards, all our apprentices are supported to apply for suitable vacancies when they complete their apprenticeship so that they can make use of their new skills and qualifications.

Please note: You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in the same or similar subject. If you have extensive knowledge or experience in this occupational area, you may not be eligible to undertake the apprenticeship.
