Early in 2008 our Community Development Unit arranged a focus group to seek residents' views on the introduction of a citizen's award scheme in Newcastle. Residents' views and the recommendations from the focus group were then considered at an Honours Panel.

It was felt that there was a clear need to celebrate and recognise the contribution which individuals made to life in the city and that these awards should be reserved for those who have made an exceptional contribution.

The scheme is is known as the Lord Mayor's Award and is administered through the Lord Mayor's Office. The first awards ceremony took place in the autumn of 2008.
