Members of Newcastle Libraries have access to the quality online reference resources below. Our resources cover the following topics:

  • Encyclopedias and dictionaries
  • Family history
  • Newspaper archives
  • Business information
  • Practice tests (Life in the UK, driving theory...)

Most if these online services require you to login with with your library card number and PIN. 

If you are not a member and would like to access some of these services, you can join online.

If you have forgotten your PIN you can reset it yourself online.

Access to Research

Access to Research provides free access to over 30 million Academic Papers and Journal articles.  Access to Research is one of the best resources for peer reviewed, reliable information. Please note, although you can search for titles remotely, the journal articles can only be accessed on site in any of Newcastle Libraries.

Britannica Online

Search Encyclopedia Britannica Online for easy-to-use information rich in pictures, videos and animations from a trusted source. There are versions of the encyclopaedia tailored for adults, students aged 12 to 18 and children aged 5 to 11. It's the perfect place for all levels of research, including those tough homework questions!

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography contains the biographies of deceased people who helped shape British history. The biographies include links to related content on other websites such as the National Portrait Gallery.

The Oxford English Dictionary provides authoritative definitions of over 500,000 words including etymological analysis and pronunciation.

Oxford Reference Online

Oxford Reference Online brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest and most trusted reference publishers. It's your port of call for bilingual dictionaries, grammar, etymology, quotations, proverbs and subject-specific dictionaries.

Oxford Art Online

Search Oxford Art Online to access the content of Grove Art Online and other reference resources. Oxford Art Online includes over 200,000 articles that span ancient to contemporary art and architecture, as well as over 19,000 images of works of art, structures, plans, and artist signatures.

Oxford Music Online

Oxford Music Online provides biographical information on classical and modern musicians from Amadeus Mozart to Aphex Twin. There are also articles on composers, conductors, instruments and notation.

Ancestry Library Edition

While libraries are closed, Ancestry have allowed home access. Through this database you will be able to search and view thousands of family records such as census, military records, births, marriages and deaths.

To access: login to your online account on the online catalogue, using your card number and password. Click on the link to Ancestry on your account summary page, displayed once you've logged in.

 

Find My Past

While libraries are closed, Find My Past have allowed home access. Trace your ancestry and build a family tree by researching extensive birth records, census data, obituaries...

To access: email us your request for access accompanied by your library card number at information@newcastle.gov.uk and we will provide you with a login.

 

British Library Newspapers

The British Library Newspapers database includes three northern titles: the Newcastle Courant, the Northern Liberator and the Northern Echo. It also includes a range of regional and national titles, for example, the Illustrated Police News. If you are interested in family history or general historical research you will find this database useful.

Times Digital Archive

Search through the complete digital edition of The Times from 1785 - now available to 2014 - to retrieve either a specific article or a complete page. On the Times Digital Archive the entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations and photos.

COBRA

COBRA is the online resource to browse for practical information on starting, running and managing a small business. It includes detailed business opportunity profiles and factsheets.

Kompass EasyBusiness

Kompass EasyBusiness contains information on over 43 million companies across 71 countries worldwide.

To access: login to your online account on the online catalogue, using your card number and password. Click on the link to Kompass EasyBusiness on your account summary page, displayed once you've logged in.

Theory Test Pro

Theory Test Pro is a highly realistic online simulation of the UK's driving theory tests for all vehicle categories. It contains all the official test questions licensed from the Driving Standards Agency (the DSA), the people that set the tests.

To access: click on the hyperlink above. If it is the first time you use Theory Test Pro you will be required to create an account using your card number and an email address. Your progress on the tests will be saved to your account.

 

Life in Britain

Life in Britain is an online resource that helps those preparing for the Life in the UK British citizenship test. It is easy to use and features practice tests which simulate the Test experience with 25 questions and a 45 minute timer and speech.

The British way of life contains information that may be useful for people newly arrived in the UK. It covers topics such as the different types of visa, finding a job, pre-school for children, further adult education, public transport, staying safe in your home, necessary house and car insurance, etc.
