Heritage Open Days (HODs) take place each year around the UK, this year there are lots of events taking place in the Region. 

To find registered events please do check out the Heritage Open Days website. 

This year we have one in person event, a guided walk with Mike Greatbatch on the 13 September, to book please use Eventbrite

St James' Heritage and Environment Group

The St James’ Heritage and Environment Group are also running several events during HODs, exploring Benwell’s Heritage.  Booking is essential for the tours, please do email stjamesbenwell@gmail.com 

St James’ Graveyard Open Days 

Saturday 11 September and Wednesday 15 September, 10am – 4pm 

Visit the historic graveyard of St James’, burial place of the developer Richard Grainger, mining engineer John Buddle, glass manufacturer John Sowerby among others. 

Guided Tours 

Who’s who in the graveyard: Guided Tour 

Saturday 11 September 1pm – tour leaves from St James’ Graveyard, Benwell Lane. 

A Walk around Roman Benwell: Guided Tour 

Wednesday 15 September 11am – tour leaves from St James’ Graveyard, Benwell Lane.
