Reading Well Shelf Help

What is 'Reading Well Shelf Help'?

Reading Well Shelf Help was developed for young people to help you cope with the pressures of life, feel better about yourself and boost your confidence using books. The books were chosen by young people and health experts to help you with difficult feelings and experiences that can affect your wellbeing. The books have information and advice as well as personal stories about dealing with feelings such as anxiety, depression or stress and experiences such as bullying.

What are the books and where can I find them?

There are copies of each title at nine of our libraries: City, Cruddas Park, Denton Burn, East End, Fenham, Gosforth, Kenton, Outer West and West End Libraries. Books can be borrowed for 4 weeks at a time. You can extend this loan period and renew the books if no one else has reserved them. The recommended books can be found in our participating libraries in the Teenage section under 'Reading Well Shelf Help'. Please ask a member of staff if you're unsure where this section is. Like any of our books, you can reserve these books and pick them up from any of our libraries. View the 35 titles recommended on the scheme

Reading Well Shelf Help for young people

How does it work?

Anyone can borrow the recommended books. You can use the books on your own, although self-help reading often works best with support from a health professional. We would recommend you to talk to your GP if you are struggling with a health problem as they can advise you on the support that's available.

Other Health Resources

You don't need to struggle on your own.  As well as your GP being able to offer help and advice. You might also find it helpful to talk things through with people you trust such as your parents, a friend or a teacher, or a school nurse or counsellor if you're still at school. For support has information and short films on mental health services or visit a national charity committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of young people.
