As part of our ongoing commitment to improve pre-birth practice and outcomes for children and families in Newcastle we are developing a dedicated Pre-Birth Team within Children’s Social Care. The newly developed Team will provide intensive support during pregnancy to parents by completing holistic assessments of need and risk and providing specific, goal orientated support. Parents will be supported to achieve and sustain change, enabling them to provide safe appropriate parenting to their baby. The primary aim of the Pre-birth Team is to support parents from the earliest opportunity so that they can safely care for their child from birth. This is done via intensive intervention from social workers, family support workers and other professionals. Robust pre-birth assessments are completed alongside this work to allow evidence-based decisions to be made.

Newcastle Children’s Social Care is committed to improving pre-birth practice and outcomes for children and families. Newcastle has been a partner within the Born into Care research and has also worked collaboratively with other Local Authorities in region to develop best practice within this area.

Do you want to be part of an exciting new development that will make a difference to children’s lives? Do you have a passion for relational social work? Are you or do you aspire to be a dynamic Team Manager? Do you want an employer who will support you to have the career that is right for you, in a service that is GOOD across all areas?

If so, then Newcastle City Council is the place for you!

We are extremely proud of our recent Ofsted report https://files.ofsted.gov.uk/v1/file/50176758 which recognised “a stable and permanent workforce is in place and, in the majority of teams, there are manageable caseloads and good management support.”

We are looking for a Team Manager in our newly developed Pre-Birth Team to lead a team of Social Workers and Family Support Workers to deliver best practice in this field of Children’s Social Care.

We are looking for experienced Social Work Leaders who are committed to children and families receiving excellent services. This is an exciting time to join us. Through our innovative work as part of the DfE’s Strengthening Families Protecting Children programme we are implementing the Family Valued approach across our service and city to transform how we work with children, families, and partners. Family Valued is a relational and restorative approach to services, focussing on strength and values. As part of our Children’s Social Care management team, you will be instrumental in helping us to continue to shape and deliver our ambitious plans.

To support our vision for children and families we are looking for a Team Manager with an extensive knowledge and skill-base in children’s social care to join our Pre-Birth Team.

You must be able to confidently and creatively supervise and manage a varied and complex range of cases. You must be driven and ambitious, both for yourself and the staff you manage but most importantly for children and families. As a confident leader you must be able to drive best practice in a supportive and reflective way to champion children and families whilst ensuring that the safety of children remains your highest priority. You will practice at the highest of standards and motivate others to do the same.

In February 2022 Newcastle Children’s Social Care was rated as GOOD across all areas by Ofsted.

“Social workers are positive about working for Newcastle. They feel well supported through their induction and speak of supportive and available managers. There is a clear workforce development strategy and workforce development plan which ensure that workers are offered a range of training and development opportunities, and progression is supported and encouraged. There are low rates of agency staff and there is stability in the workforce. This ensures that children have stable, allocated social workers they can develop relationships with.”

Through our innovative work as part of the DFE’s Strengthening Families Protecting Children programme we are implementing a relational and restorative approach across our service and city to transform how we work with children, families and partners, focusing on strengths and values. If you want to continue to grow and develop your skillset now is the time to join us!

As an enthusiastic team player, you will benefit from a dedicated and supportive workplace culture where we will support you to succeed. Our social workers tell us “Newcastle is such a good authority to work for” where “our shared vision and values are really rooted in our practice” (feedback from staff members 2021). You can hear more about what it is like to work at Newcastle and read our working principles at www.newcastle.gov.uk/csc

We offer a comprehensive range of training and professional opportunities, overseen by our Social Work Centre of Excellence, that evolves and develops to meet the needs of our workforce at every stage of their career. We are committed to our staff receiving the opportunities they need to develop and flourish at all stages of their career. At Newcastle “social workers feel well supported” and practice improvement is delivered “creatively and innovatively” (Ofsted Focus Visit Outcome Letter 2019)

In addition, you will receive:

• A dedicated 5-day induction

• Generous annual leave in addition to Bank Holidays with the ability to buy additional leave annually

• A range of flexible working options

• A generous Flexi Scheme

• Access to Mindfulness sessions and other wellbeing initiatives

• Access to a generous, defined benefit pension scheme

Our Team Managers tell us:

“Newcastle have invested in me as a team manager and demonstrate a commitment to developing their staff, with exciting training and other opportunities for development frequently being offered.”

“Newcastle is an exciting, varied and supportive place to work. I love my role as a team manager, both the challenges and rewards it brings, and see myself continuing in this role with Newcastle for many years to come.”
