We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, emotionally resilient, and experienced Social Worker to join the Children’s Hospital Social Work Team, to be based in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI in Newcastle.

The Children’s Hospital Social Work Team is Newcastle City Council’s provision to families whose children have complex health conditions from birth or whom have on going health needs and disability. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, emotionally resilient and experienced Social Worker who can work in a positive, empathetic and transparent manner with families caring for their children who have a critical injury or illness and require Intensive Care Treatment within the Great North Children’s Hospital. The post also involves close collaborative working with health care colleagues.

You will be part of the Childrens Hospital Social Work Team and based at the Great North Children’s Hospital within the RVI in Newcastle. This is a challenging but exciting opportunity to be part of a fantastic MDT.

You will need to have sound knowledge of child development and be able to demonstrate excellent communication and negotiation skills, with both families and professionals. Experience of working with children, parents and other professionals is essential. Knowledge of the challenges faced by families who are caring for a child who has an ongoing health need or disability will be desirable for this post.

You must have a relevant social work qualification, such as Degree in Social Work, DipSW, CQSW, CSS or equivalent, and current Social Work England registration.

We will consider applications for progressed (N8) role as the post does involve very complex work with families who have children who are critically unwell and the role can be emotionally challenging and demanding. You should therefore have at least 2 years post qualifying experience and have achieved a Post Qualifying Award.

We are committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff to share this commitment. This post is working in regulated activity. If you are successful we will undertake additional recruitment checks which will include a check to see if you have had any criminal convictions, a check of police information and we will check the barred list(s). It is a criminal offence for a barred individual to apply for a job in regulated activity.

As this post involves working with children, vulnerable adults or dealing with sensitive information, written references will be taken up and made available to interviewers before the final selection stage; even if you indicate otherwise.

We are strongly committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS disclosure and a range of other recruitment checks.

If you are interested in this post and would like a further discussion or a visit to the Cardiac Unit to meet the Team, please email Team Manager julie.anderson2@newcastle.gov.uk with your preferred contact number.
