Are you at the beginning of your social work career? Are you a motivated and child-centred social worker? Do you want a supportive workplace that will work with you to make a difference to children and families, in a service that is GOOD across all areas?

If this is you - then Newcastle City Council is the place for you!

The Role

We are looking for Social Workers, including those wishing to undertake their ASYE, in our Initial Response Service, and Long-Term Social Work Service.

The Initial Response Service undertakes assessments when children are first referred to Children’s Social Care, as well as providing some short-term support to children in need. The Long-Term Social Work Service provides support to children and their families when a longer-term plan is required.

Who we are looking for?

We are looking for social workers at the start of their social work career (ASYE or less than two years post qualifying experience) who are committed to providing excellent services to children and families.

We are looking for Social Workers who are committed to working with children, young people, and their families in a relational and restorative way and you will be committed to upholding our Working Principles in all aspects of your work.

Why Newcastle Children’s Social Care?

In February 2022 Newcastle Children’s Social Care was rated as GOOD across all areas by Ofsted.

“Social workers are positive about working for Newcastle. They feel well supported through their induction and speak of supportive and available managers. There is a clear workforce development strategy and workforce development plan which ensure that workers are offered a range of training and development opportunities, and progression is supported and encouraged. There are low rates of agency staff and there is stability in the workforce. This ensures that children have stable, allocated social workers they can develop relationships with.”

Through our innovative work as part of the DFE’s Strengthening Families Protecting Children programme (read about our work with the DfE and Leeds City Council) we are implementing a relational and restorative approach across our service and city to transform how we work with children, families and partners, focusing on strengths and values.

As an enthusiastic team player, you will benefit from a dedicated and supportive workplace culture where we will support you to succeed. We offer a comprehensive range of training and professional opportunities, overseen by our Social Work Centre of Excellence. Social workers in their ASYE year will be part of our ASYE Hub which provides a targeted development programme as you begin your career with dedicated support from our Social Work Centre of Excellence Lead and a tailored ASYE programme.

Ofsted also found that ‘The vast majority of newly qualified social workers feel supported, with protected caseloads and access to training and workshops and regular supervision from both their team managers and consultant. This is ensuring that they can learn and develop their social work skills safely and in line with their development.’

“As an AYSE I felt so supported by Newcastle, the AYSE programme is tailored to help newly qualified social workers move from the role of student to social worker in a way which allows them to grow and develop as a practitioner in a safe and supportive environment” (ASYE Social Worker 2021).
