Newcastle is an ambitious city, it always has been a city with a proud history, the fastest growing population in the North East, an iconic city with a rich heritage and a city which shapes the exciting future of the region.

Newcastle City Council and its partners are the driving force behind this successful city, and alongside our net zero carbon emissions target that will help secure its future, we have a commitment to deliver inclusive, quality, consistent and value for money services that will benefit everyone in the city.

Working for Newcastle City Council isn’t like any other job. Everything we do has an impact on the lives of the people that live here, and our commitment to deliver quality services, diligence and energy is second to none.

The role:

We are looking to recruit to two new Scrutiny Officer posts, following a review of the Council’s approach to scrutiny in autumn 2022. The posts provide an opportunity to further your career in governance, working across a range of scrutiny committees and developing and managing relationships with politicians, senior officers and partner organisations, providing advice and information, drawing on the Council’s constitution as well as research and data to help inform decision making.

The postholders will work within democratic services to support and enhance the role of scrutiny across the council. You’ll need to have excellent communications and prioritisation skills, with the ability to interpret and explain complex guidance and legislation to different audiences, whilst being mindful of political sensitivity.

What can we offer you?

In return, we can offer you a competitive salary and pension with the option to opt in to an AVC scheme, a generous annual leave allowance and the option to buy additional annual leave, numerous salary sacrifice schemes, generous flexi scheme, flexible and agile working arrangements, professional development opportunities and a rewarding, challenging career where you can genuinely make a difference.

Why work for us?

We strive to be an organisation where equality, diversity and inclusion is part of who we are and how we work and where everybody is treated fairly, with dignity and respect. We are committed to building an inclusive and supportive workplace where everyone can bring their whole self to work and succeed in being their best.

Our people deliver amazing services, initiatives and projects to benefit the lives of our residents and visitors to the City. They also develop, manage, and maintain the City’s vital infrastructure and public spaces that our societies and communities rely on.

If you want to be an integral part to making a citywide difference for our residents and visitors, then we want to hear from you
