Newcastle Children’s Vision Team, part of the SEND Sensory Service, have a vacancy for an Habilitation Specialist Officer to work in a peripatetic role with young people 0- 25 years with a visual impairment.

The successful candidate will be working as part of a small, dedicated team to promote and maximise the independence and inclusion for the Babies, Children and Young people with vision impairments who live in Newcastle upon Tyne, working with families and professionals in education and social settings.

We are looking to appoint the right person who is an enthusiastic motivated professional, committed to improving outcomes for all our vision impaired young people particularly around independence and mobility. You must be an effective communicator with adults and young people and understand the impact of vision or multi-sensory impairment.

Values and behaviours are more important than formal qualifications, therefore we will consider both Registered Qualified Habilitation Specialists, Habilitation Specialists in training and candidates with relevant experience without the qualification who are interested in developing their specialist skills. They should have experience of working with children and young people with special educational needs in schools and / or home environments.

If unqualified the successful candidate must be willing to undertake the two-year specialist postgraduate qualification to train as a QHS.

Due to the nature of this role you must be able to travel independently to meet the requirements of the post. A mileage allowance is available from your office base. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle is desirable.
