With the Lindisfarne Gospels being at shown the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2022 an exciting new opportunity has arisen to join the arts team at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.

The spectacular Lindisfarne Gospels are of international significance as one of the greatest landmarks of human cultural achievement with a uniquely important place in the art and culture of the North East. This exceptionally beautiful book represents the golden age of Anglo-Saxon design and craftsmanship in Northumbria. The gospels have remarkably survived wars and the ravages of time for over one thousand years in almost perfect condition.

Supported by the arts team and liaising with colleagues from the British Library you will manage and develop a high profile and varied programme, including commissioning a major new contemporary art work in response to the Gospels. You will have a commitment to working with artists and developing engaging programmes that will enthuse audiences. With a degree or equivalent qualification/ experience in art/history of art, you will have experience of working in galleries and/or museums and of delivering major temporary exhibitions.

You will also be an effective team worker with the confidence and ability to lead creatively and work closely with colleagues in regional and national museums to ensure delivery of a high quality programme. It is essential that the post holder has the ability to work on their own initiative, is self-motivated, a good communicator and very well organised.
