This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of one of the UK’s leading cities in a post that will see you providing strategic support to the Leader of the Council and Cabinet.

Newcastle City Council is a local authority dedicated to improving the lives of people across the city and you will play a crucial role supporting delivery of that commitment. You will be at the forefront of shaping the future of local government, working on issues as varied as our response to the challenges of climate change right through to the future of local government funding.

This is a key liaison post that will see you supporting the leadership of a values-led organisation and ensure the council is delivering on its priorities. You will provide day-to-day support to the Leader of Council, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Members, who will regularly look to you for advice and information on a wide range of issues.

You will work extensively with a wide range of private and public sector partners, acting as a key interface between political leaders and external organisations. With our senior leaders well engaged with national Government you will need to be as confident lobbying Government ministers and engaging with senior civil servants, as you are responding to the needs of local residents.

We are looking for a candidate capable of thinking strategically about how to advance our aims for the city, building on a highly developed understanding of local, regional and national issues, and a strong understanding of how political issues at those levels impact on decision making and delivery.

You will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and time management skills, together with tact and well-developed influencing skills. A high level of initiative and the ability to listen and communicate confidently and clearly, both orally and in writing is essential. The ability to learn fast and retain information is essential alongside an ability to meet tight deadlines with accuracy and confidentiality.

Ideally you will have experience of working in a political environment, perhaps in local or central government, or having engaged with politicians in some way.

You will need flexibility to meet the varying demands of the role and be able to attend some late night and early morning meetings.

This post is politically restricted under Part 1 of the Local Government & Housing Act 1989.
