Working in adult social care for the City Council in Newcastle

Working for the City Council in Newcastle isn’t like any other job. Everything we do has an impact on the people that live in our City so our commitment, diligence and energy have to be second to none.

As a council and as a city we have high aspirations including delivering the vision of a vibrant, inclusive, safe, sustainable and modern European city. At the same time we need to deliver ambitious change to keep to our financial targets.

Want access to the beaches and countryside of the North-East but enjoy the culture, buzz and diversity of the city? Then come at work at Newcastle City Council’s Adult Services.

Not only is Newcastle is a rewarding place for a social worker to be employed, but with The Times “2017 Best place to live in the North-East” – Tynemouth, within commuting distance, then Newcastle has it all. Of course we would say that, but our staff say that too, in our recent anonymous staff survey these were some of the comments “Fantastic Authority to work for – won’t consider any other!”, “A supportive council” & “You work with some passionate, dedicated and experienced colleagues…”

We have a strong, stable workforce with a mix of good quality NQSWs and experienced workers. We invest in social workers from the start of their career, with an established ASYE scheme with protected development time and a reduced caseload in your first year. We believe in lifelong CPD - the majority of our NQSWs undertake a Post-Qualifying Award and start to study for a Post-Graduate Certificate within their first year.

As a social worker we know you will be interested in the quality of management support you will receive.  In addition to Masters level management courses being available to managers and aspiring managers, we have recently invested in Reflective Supervision Training for social work supervisors and encourage accessible management support, but again the best people to tell you about this are our staff   - “I am well supported in my job, there is a positive vibe and praise is given for good work.” “Staff are positive, passionate and teams are very supportive”, “Excellent management support, the authority is responsive and up to speed”. In Adult Services we value social work, managers up to director level are all social work qualified and there is an emphasis on achieving best outcomes for the people who use our services.  Our supportive environment extends past direct management support, with Newcastle City Council being voted, 2nd in 2017 Stonewall Local Government Workplace Equality Index.

Newcastle Adult Services is involved in regional and national initiatives; our Safeguarding Team has received national recognition for their work in tackling adult sexual exploitation; we are using Innovative Service Funds to work with people with learning disabilities & autism and we are part of the North-East Teaching Partnership and provide social work placements to local universities alongside facilitating practitioners to link into social work programmes.

As a newly recruited social worker you will receive a competitive salary and access to our generous two days a month flexible working scheme
