Newcastle is a great City, one that never stands still, that faces forward and embraces change. A City that makes history and shapes the future with a bold vision to achieve its ambitions supporting a post-pandemic vibrant City for both its residents and visitors.

Our services are powered by people and inspired by fresh ideas, and we have an exciting opportunity for an individual looking to start their career at Newcastle City Council in an apprenticeship role.

What will I be doing?

You will be based at City Transport’s vehicle maintenance workshops near Newcastle city centre. The team at City Transport provide a wide range of vehicle repair and maintenance activities as well as MOT testing across Newcastle City Council departments as well as outside organisations. You will be assisting Motor vehicle technicians in their duties in either the heavy or light goods vehicle workshops.

As an apprentice you will be learning on the job whilst being mentored by our qualified experienced staff. You will gain the knowledge to enable you to inspect, service and repair a diverse range of vehicles in one of our workshops.

What will I need?

As this is a Level 3 apprenticeship, it requires equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 / C or above in Maths and English or the ability to achieve this determined though an assessment.

What will I receive in return?

We will support you to learn new skills, to thrive in your role, while undertaking a level 3 Apprenticeship Qualification in either heavy or light vehicle service and maintenance. This would be achieved by attending Gateshead College on a day release basis. The role is full time (37 hours per week Monday to Friday) for a fixed term of three years. At Newcastle City Council our apprentices are paid a percentage of the salary for the role the apprentice is working towards. This is always at least National Minimum Wage and increases each year as you develop your knowledge and skills.

This apprenticeship role is working towards the full role of Motor Vehicle Technician (N7 grade starting salary £32,020) please see job description in supporting documents on Northeast jobs

In Year one you will be paid 55% of the salary rate, or NMW, whichever is higher.

In Year two you will be paid 60% of the salary rate or NMW, whichever is higher.

In Year three you will be paid 65% of the salary rate or NMW, whichever is higher.

Whilst we are unable to guarantee a post in the role apprentices work towards, all our apprentices are supported to apply for suitable vacancies when they complete their apprenticeship so that they can make use of their new skills and qualifications.

If you believe this could be the right opportunity for you and you would like to gain skills, experience and a qualification that will enable you to have a career in the transport sector we would love to hear from you.
