Converting a Civil Partnership to a Marriage
Converting a Civil Partnership to a Marriage
From 10 December 2014 couples who registered their civil partnership in England and Wales are able to convert their civil partnership to marriage.
How do I convert my civil partnership to marriage?
There are two ways to convert a civil partnership to marriage:
- A standard conversion
- A two stage conversion
Standard Conversion
This is an administrative process where you both attend an appointment at any Register Office. You will complete a declaration with details about you and your civil partnership.
You will need to provide the following documents:
- Proof of name and your date of birth – current passports or birth certificates
- Proof of address – a recent council tax bill or utility bill
- An original civil partnership certificate
You can choose to say the declaration aloud to each other before signing the conversion document. Your marriage is then registered and a marriage certificate will be issued.
Two Stage Conversion
The first stage of the conversion is where you will both attend an appointment at any Register Office. You will complete a declaration with details about you and your civil partnership.
You will need to provide the following documents:
- Proof of name and your date of birth – current passports or birth certificates
- Proof of address – a recent council tax bill or utilities bill
- An original civil partnership certificate
The second stage is a ceremony at a venue where same sex couples are able to marry. You will sign the declaration at the ceremony, your marriage is registered and a marriage certificate is issued. You certificate can be collected from the Register Office or posted to you after the ceremony.
