A shared ambition to transform the city centre’s retail core.
On 21 September 2016 Newcastle City Council and partners NE1 Ltd launched a shared ambition to transform Northumberland Street into a word-class retail and leisure destination to rival of that of other major European regional cities.

Since then, our Retail and Economic Advisors (Cushman & Wakefield) and Design Advisors (FaulknerBrowns) have been working on a masterplan and business case to transform the area. Mark Williams, Director of Hark Group, a national retail expert, independently chaired the stakeholder group that informed the work – including property owners and retailers who wished to influence the work, both universities, Northumbria Police, Newcastle NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust and NE1.
Council’s Cabinet has now made some key decisions about what should happen next. Cabinet also made some resolutions about the future vision for the Blackett Street area, including the top end of Pilgrim Street and New Bridge Street West. Read more about that decision.
Around 100 businesses attended a briefing on 5th February 2018, to hear about future plans, and the collaborative approach needed between retailers, traders, property owners, agents and businesses to secure a retail core fit for the future.

Over the next 18 months there are a number of tasks including set up and planning, technical appraisals and options for physical and regulatory changes, develop a phased programme, develop and implement an engagement plan, procure a detailed design team, set up a new space management function, deep clean and prepare for the Great Exhibition of the North, and continue consultation with bus operators about proposed changes to Blackett Street.
