Monuments and War Memorials

Monuments and War Memorials

There are a wide range of historic monuments and buildings that the City Council own.

The Conservation Team is responsible for the care and maintenance of the City's historic monuments and memorials. Many have specific statutory protection, as Scheduled Monuments, or as Listed Buildings.

The war memorials, monuments, drinking fountains and historic buildings around the City need to be maintained on a regular basis against the affects of air pollution, weathering, wear and tear, and vandalism.

A wide range of specialists are used to assist with the management of our historic monuments, to ensure the highest standards of workmanship and conservation practice.

An essential element of the wider programme of care is the production of detailed condition surveys which inform the detailed direction and timing of both the routine maintenance and any necessary remedial work.

War Memorials

War memorials are collective monuments to the many lives lost as a consequence of war they are a significant part of the historic environment. The North East War Memorial Project contains an index to all memorials in the area. A national list of memorials can be found at War Memorials Online with further information available in the Imperial War Museum’s War Memorials Archive.

Major alterations to a war memorial require planning permission although routine works rarely do. Relocation or demolition of a memorial within a Conservation Area will require planning permission. Listed Building Consent (LBC) is required if work to a listed memorial will affect the special architectural character or historic interest of the monument.

The War Memorials Trust assist custodians with grant applications to repair war memorials.
