Can children get a badge?

Children must be usually 2 years old before they can qualify for a badge as they would not normally be expected to walk on their own at this age anyway.

However, from 15 October 2007 children under 2 years old may qualify for a badge if they travel with bulky medical equipment or must remain close to a vehicle for emergency medical treatment.

How long is the badge valid for?

The badge is usually valid for 3 years from the date it was issued, but sometimes it can be valid for a shorter time.  If you are entitled to a badge because you get the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate or score 8 points or more for the “Moving Around” descriptor for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), but your current award expires in less than 3 years’ time then the badge will only run for the same time period as the award.

I've lost my badge, what do I do?

If your badge was issued by Newcastle City Council and you still live in Newcastle we can issue you with a replacement.  You will need to complete the Duplicate Blue Badge Application Form (pdf, 164kb) and return it to Parking Services, PO Box 2BL, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE99 2BL telling us you have lost the badge.  The notes of guidance (pdf, 108.89kb) will help you complete the form.  If the badge was stolen please contact the Police to obtain a crime reference number.

If you have moved house and are no longer living in Newcastle we cannot replace your badge. You will need to apply for a new one from your local council.

How do I renew my badge?

You will need to apply for the badge again to renew it.  Please contact us or go into a Customer Service Centre for an application form and notes of guidance 2 months before your badge is due to expire.  From 01 January 2012 the Department for Transport (DfT) have introduced a new application form, which requests more information than was previously captured.  You need to provide 1 new passport style photograph and if you automatically qualify for the badge then you must also send the relevant proof, even if you have sent it before.

Is there a charge for the badge?

If your application is successful there is an administrative charge of £10 (from 01 January 2012) to be paid before we can issue your badge.

Can I park anywhere with a badge?

No, the badge does not allow you to park anywhere and you can still be given a Parking Notice if you do not use it correctly. It comes with a handbook that tells you how to use the badge, which you should read carefully. We also have a checklist you can follow to make sure you are using the badge properly. If you follow the information in the handbook and our checklist you shouldn't have to worry about getting a Parking Notice.

How long does it take to apply for a badge?

This depends on a number of things. On average applications take approximately 4 weeks, although individual cases vary. You can help to speed things up by making sure you complete the form properly and sending everything it asks for.  The biggest delay is almost always finding out if you qualify for a badge, so if you automatically qualify it makes a huge difference if you send your proof with your form.
