Budding gardeners and green-fingered enthusiasts are invited to show off their gardening skills at the annual Newcastle Allotment and Garden Fete.

Newcastle Allotment and Garden Fete, organised by Newcastle City Council in partnership with the city’s Allotments Working Group, will be held on Sunday 24 September.

The event will take place in a marquee within the beautiful setting of Leazes Park, Newcastle’s oldest park, close to the city centre.

Cllr Kim McGuinness, Newcastle City Councils’ Cabinet Member for Culture and Community said:

“The city’s allotment and gardening tradition is a true representation of the community spirit so associated with Newcastle and it's residents. This year marks a centenary for a number of allotment sites across the city. This event gives people the perfect opportunity to celebrate this landmark.”

“It's great to see an increasing number of people in Newcastle are enjoying the rewarding experience of gardening or looking after an allotment. Allotments are incredibly important to the city and we're very proud of ours. They're great, social spaces that add value to the community, they bring excellent health benefits and, as the show is testament every year, they give talented, experienced gardeners, as well as those taking it up for the first time the space they need.”

The show will have lots of classes to enter and will be open to all amateur gardeners, young and old, across the region who are keen to show off their gardening skills. There will be a full range of flower, vegetable and fruit classes, including the popular and prestigious ‘2 Pot Leeks Challenge Cup,’ plus produce classes for jams, chutneys and wine.” Prize money will also be awarded to the best exhibits on the day.

The public show starts at 11am, when it will be officially opened by the Sheriff of Newcastle, Cllr David Down, and finishes at 5pm. It will be a fun filled weekend for both friends and family and will also include entertainment, children’s activities, music, face painting, raffles, stalls selling a wide range of flowers, produce and preserves, advice on bee keeping, organic gardening and much, much more.

From Friday 22 September through to the 1 October, the park will be hosting a large dinosaur event, Jurassic Kingdom - Newcastle (click on link here) which is expected to draw in crowds which will add to the splendour of the weekend.
