Essential night-time maintenance works on Tyne Bridge
Starting 13 May the City Council in partnership with Gateshead Council will deliver essential maintenance works to replace the bridge expansion joints on the iconic structure, which were originally installed back in 2000 and are now coming to the end of their natural life. To reduce the traffic disruption the works will be carried out during night-time hours with the bridge closure being between 8pm and 6am.
The works will be carried out on 7 consecutive nights from Sunday 13 May through to 20 May 2018. During this time, the northbound traffic over the Tyne Bridge will be reduced to one lane with the bridge being closed to southbound traffic, which will be diverted to the Redheugh Bridge.
The removal of the old bridge expansion joints and installation of new ones will involve potentially noisy operations. We will try to keep the noise to a minimum.
The partnership team apologies in advance for any disruption this may cause.
Letters have been issued to local residents and businesses who may be affected by the works.
