Newgate Street - Update

Pedestrians can now walk along Newgate Street in Newcastle City Centre after roofing materials blown in high winds led to its closure.

A scaffold tunnel has been completed in front of the former Co-op building which is now occupied by the Premier Inn and other businesses which are all now open.

Contractors are currently constructing a second tunnel on the other side of Newgate Street running along Intu Eldon Square, New Look and Debenhams, which are also open for business.

Work will also soon start on erecting scaffolding at the rear of the Premier Inn so contractors can begin to make the roof safe. Subject to weather conditions this will start on Saturday.

Due to the risk of falling debris Newgate Street will remain closed to buses and taxis. It is not possible to say for how long as work is subject to survey work being carried out when the weather is calm.

Newgate Street was closed shortly after 2am on Wednesday after strong winds damaged the roof of the Premier Inn sending insulation panels falling down onto the street. No one was injured.

Newcastle City Council will continue to monitor the issue.
