Historic ballustrades destroyed by vandals

Newcastle City Council are still counting the cost of the damage to historic Leazes Park but early estimates show the bill could be over £10,000.

The Victorian ballustrades and bandstand in the popular park were vandalised on Wednesday evening in an incident being investigated by the police.

Cllr Kim McGuinness, cabinet member for culture and communities at Newcastle City Council said: “It’s heartbreaking to see this damage to one of our much-loved parks.

“This is where families come to enjoy time together and local people go to exercise.

“There has been considerable damage to the Victorian balustrades and bandstand.

“The area has been made safe and the debris stored in a hope that sympathetic repairs can be made.

“However, this obviously won’t come cheap and it’s a disgrace that these actions can have such a huge impact in such a short time, for no reason.

“We are confident Northumbria Police is doing all they can to find the people who did this”.

Many residents have been in touch with the council asking how they can help. Please go to Friends of Leazes Park webpage.
