Council Tax Scam Alert February 2017

Over the last few months there have been a few different council tax scams. Taxpayers have received calls, emails and letters stating that they are either due a refund or that the band is incorrect and the offer to reduce it.

Payments are asked for in advance and the contacts claim to be government departments eg HMRC or some type of claims bureau.

If you receive any communications like this then please remember the following:

  • Never make a payment or give bank details
  • Band reductions can be investigated free of charge
  • Do not respond or click any links in a text or email

Unfortunately these types of scams are ongoing in all types of areas so the best advice is to ignore them. However if someone is concerned they have been a victim or want to report a potential scam then they can contact Action Fraud on the details below.

Action Fraud 0300 123 2040 online www.actionfraud.police.uk
