Council success in Stonewall top 100
Newcastle City Council has been ranked as one of the best employers in the country for its commitment to equality and diversity according to Stonewall, the national LGBT (lesbian, gay and bisexual and Transgender) charity.
The council was placed equal 38th in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2016, and is ranked as the 2nd highest performing local authority in the country.
The free to enter index looks at how employers support their LGBT staff in the workplace and ranks the best top 100.
All too often lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are not supported to be open about who they are in the workplace which can not only impact on an employee’s performance but ultimately on their health and wellbeing
Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet Member for Policy and Communications, Cllr Stephen Powers said:
“I am absolutely delighted with our place in this year’s Stonewall Index. Over the last five years we have consistently performed well by being ranked within the top 50 most LGBT friendly workplaces. We have clearly demonstrated that equality is at the heart of our values and culture despite severe cuts to our resources.
"I am so proud of our staff who have worked tirelessly to make a real difference to people’s lives. We will be doing our best to improve our ranking even further in the future.”
