Retail and leisure offer
Newcastle City Council, in partnership with the business improvement district NE1 has set out ambitious plans to transform the city centres’ retail core into the North of England’s leading retail district and a significant European destination.
The vision is to create a destination that will work in harmony with many inspiring projects, put the heart back into the city and offer a diverse and rewarding experience for both local people and visitors to the city.
The council’s cabinet approved a £2.4m package of improvements in November 2017 to kick start transformation and act as a catalyst for the further public and private investment needed to ensure the continued and growth of the area.
To realise our ambition, we are now undertaking a procurement exercise to secure the services of an organisation experienced and skilled in applying the concept of placemaking to build on the recommendations of a previous business case. They will be required to lead the development of the Retail Core Transformation Programme and oversee the phased implementation over a period of years.
Around 100 businesses attended a briefing on 5th February 2018, to hear about future plans, and the collaborative approach needed between retailers, traders, property owners, agents and businesses to secure a retail core fit for the future.
