NNIS currently displays information by 145 neighbourhoods, which have been developed by the Council with support from Ward Coordinators, Members and Council officers. In 2002, the neighbourhood boundaries were taken out to consultation with the public at Area Committees and continue to be used as the key geography. Changes to the neighbourhood boundaries are only made where there has been new build outside of a neighbourhood, for example, new neighbourhoods have been created following the development of the Great Park in the north of the City. More recently, city centre neighbourhoods have been added to include residential developments in adjacent areas, as well as the introduction of new neighbourhoods at Manors and in the Ouseburn Valley.

These neighbourhoods are based on a balance between, being as meaningful as possible for reflecting local issues and being suitable for monitoring trends over time, i.e. that the neighbourhoods are large enough to enable statistically meaningful and longitudinal analysis. The average size of the neighbourhoods is between 700 and 800 residential properties, although there are some smaller neighbourhoods in the north and west of the City, due to their geographic location.
