Tell Us Once

When someone has died there are lots of things that need to be done, at a time when you probably least feel like doing them. One of these is contacting government departments and local council services that need to be told.

We're now providing a service which we hope will make things easier. This service means that you can just tell us and we will pass the information to the Department for Work and Pensions. They can then pass on this information to a number of other government departments and local council services for you.

How to access the service
When someone has died, their death needs to be registered with the Registrar. You will be offered the opportunity to access the Tell Us Once service when you arrange an appointment to register a death.

If the deceased person lived in Newcastle City Council's area, you will be offered the Tell Us Once service either by a face to face appointment or over the phone (0800 085 7308).

If the deceased person did not live within Newcastle City Council's area, you will be offered the Tell Us Once service by phone (0800 085 7308).

How the service can help you
At the time you make your appointment to register a death you will be asked if you want to take part in Tell Us Once service. If you choose to take part, this means that we will send notification to the following organisations and you would then not need to send a death certificate through the post:

  • Pensions, Disability and Carer's Service
  • Jobcentre Plus
  • Overseas Health Team
  • Ministry of Defence, Service Personnel and Veterans Agency

How we will treat the information you give us
The information you give will be treated securely and confidentially. The organisations that are contacted will use the information to update records, to end services, benefits and credits as appropriate. They may use the information in other ways but only as the law allows.

Information you will need to use this service
To make sure the right information is given to any organisations we contact for you and so that you get the most out of the service, it will help if you can bring along with you the following information about the person who has died:

  • Their National Insurance Number and date of birth
  • Details of any benefits or services they were receiving
  • Their driving licence
  • Their passport
  • Their Blue Badge (disabled person's parking badge)

We may also ask you for the contact details for:

You must obtain the permission of the people listed above if you are going to provide us with information about them.
