There are 26 wards in Newcastle, each represented by 3 councillors. Elections in Newcastle are by thirds and are traditionally held on the first Thursday of May. Councillors are elected for a four year term and one councillor per ward retires each year; there are no elections in the fourth year.

Register to vote

In order to vote at elections, your name must be included in the Register of Electors. To find out if you are registered, phone 0191 277 7100.

How to vote

  • At a polling station - You can vote in person at your polling station. Normal hours of poll are 7am to 10pm. Polling stations are open at 7am and close at 10pm. To avoid queues, or missing out on your vote - make sure you know which polling station you need to go to and get there in plenty of time.
  • Postal votes - Anyone who is registered to vote can apply to have their vote sent to their home, or any other address, on a permanent basis for any reason.
