Barry Rowland was appointed Newcastle City Council’s Chief Executive in 2009.
Barry, from County Durham is a father of four who has worked at the council for over 30 years. Barry started at the council as a trainee in the Environmental Health Department in 1979 earning promotion to a succession of jobs. From 1994-95 he was Divisional Director of Building Services; from 1995-2002 he was Executive Director of Cityworks and from 2002-2003 he was Executive Director of Cityworks and Director of Strategic Change.
In 2003 he was appointed Executive Director of Operations and Business Management - a post he held for three years until becoming Deputy Chief Executive in 2006. In November 2008 he was appointed acting Chief Executive.
Since taking over as Chief Executive, Barry has overseen a council-wide transformation programme that has delivered savings to date of at least £222m over the first five years.
Barry achieved a Master of Business Administration at Durham University in 1997.
