Warm Zone

The Newcastle Warm Zone (NWZ), is a dynamic public-privateLogo for Warm Zone partnership set up to tackle fuel poverty and improve energy efficiency across the City. Since it began work in April 2004, this exciting multi-million pound project has already benefited tens of thousands of households in Newcastle.

Information about the Newcastle Warm Zone

The Newcastle Warm Zone partnership includes Warm Zones Ltd, Newcastle City Council, Your Homes Newcastle, Scottish Power, National Grid, Newcastle Primary Care Trust, insulation contractors and voluntary groups. NWZ will run for seven years to March 2011.

The project is designed to benefit all households in the city of Newcastle. The main aims of NWZ are to:

  1. Eradicate fuel poverty in the Newcastle as far as is practicable
  2. Improve energy efficiency across all the city's households

NWZ aims to this by delivering:

This will also contribute towards:

  • Reducing excess cold-related deaths in Newcastle;
  • Reducing carbon dioxide emissions by round 1.25 million tonnes over the lifetime of the installed measures, thereby resulting in substantial environmental benefits;
  • Creating up to 50 local jobs during the first four years of the project;
  • Creating 30 job training places each year for local people, supported by the European Social Fund;
  • Increasing the average energy efficiency ratings (SAP) of households in the city;
  • Increasing energy efficiency and fuel poverty awareness by offering high quality and accessible advice, including benefits and energy efficiency advice; and
  • Helping to deliver the Newcastle's Affordable Warmth Strategy.
