Sense of Place North-East
Wood engraving by Thomas Bewick, 1797 Newcastle Libraries Local Studies and Family History Centre has one of the largest collections of local material in the North East of England. It was established in 1884, but many of the items in the collection were published much earlier, dating from the first books printed in Newcastle in the 1640's.
The collection covers Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham with special emphasis on Newcastle. As well as books and pictures there is an extensive collection of local newspapers dating from 1711, historic maps of Newcastle, Northumberland and Durham, audio material, and local press cuttings from 1969 to the present time. Local family history material includes parish register transcripts, local directories dating from 1778, electoral registers for Newcastle and census returns for Newcastle, 1841 - 1901.

Wood engraving by Thomas Bewick, 1797 Special collections of local interest include the Pease Collection of books, engravings and wood blocks of local wood engraver Thomas Bewick (1753 -1828) and the Thomlinson Library - the first "public library" in Newcastle based on the private collection of Dr. Robert Thomlinson (1668 -1747).
