The late nineteenth century was a crucial time for hospital development in the region. The Hospital for Sick Children, which opened in Hanover Square in 1863, was an early example of specialist care for children. In 1886 John Fleming, a local solicitor built and furnished a new hospital for children in memory of his wife. The site chosen for the new hospital was on the edge of the Town Moor, which was more open and healthy than Hanover Square. The hospital was renamed the Fleming Memorial Hospital, opened in 1888 and remained on the same site for almost one hundred years.
