Markets - Mediaeval to Modern
This 1820 engraving by Thomas Miles Richardson Senior (1784-1848) shows a view of the Bigg Market. The Bigg Market is one of Newcastle's oldest markets.
Markets have been held in Newcastle for at least 900 years. Street and building names in today's city centre remind us of the various markets over the centuries, present and past: Grainger Market, Bigg Market, Groat Market, Cloth Market, Milk Market, Fish Market, Haymarket, Market Street, Market Lane. The earliest written evidence of a market is in a late twelfth century document which describes the customs of Newcastle. It refers to the market at Newcastle during the reign of King Henry I, 1100 to 1135. Very little information about the markets in mediaeval Newcastle has survived, however.
