About the Project

Sense of Place North-East

Tyneside Life and Times has been created by a two year project which completes at the end of April 2004. It is one of the four Sense of Place North East projects which aim to give a sense of the culture, heritage and history of the North East of England through providing web-accessible digitised objects, pictures, sound recordings, and documents.

The Tyneside Life and Times project is supported by Newcastle, and is based in Newcastle Libraries and Information Service. The project is digitising 8,000 images from the Local Studies and Family History Centre pictures collection, and creating learning materials based on those pictures. The project team is using the Local Studies' rich and varied collection of books, periodicals and maps to research additional information about the pictures. More information about Local Studies can be found here.

The team is also using the many books published by Tyne Bridge Publishing which have been written by authors with specialist knowledge of specific aspects of North East culture and heritage. Further information about Tyne Bridge Publishing can be found here.

More information about the technical aspects of this project are available here.

This project has been funded through the New Opportunities Fund's ground-breaking £50 million UK-wide digitisation programme which is designed to enable the learning materials and resources currently contained in galleries, communities, libraries, museums, universities and other centres of excellence, to be directly accessible to homes and communities via the internet. The Fund is the biggest of the National Lottery good cause distributors.
