Description
At the turn of the 20th century, cinemas were revolutionising Newcastle upon Tyne. Six cinemas opened in the city in 1908; three were in former churches, two in former circuses, and one in a shop. Frank Manders traces the history of Newcastle's cinemas from these modest beginnings through the popular picture palaces with their orchestras and luxurious tea rooms, to today's high-tech multiplexes. Newcastle's city and suburban cinemas, most of which have now vanished, are brought to life through contemporary descriptions and photography and the vivid memories of staff and patrons. Cinemas of Newcastle was first published in 1991. It has now been been completely revised and rewritten with many new photographs and illustrations. '... a step back in time through the circle and the stalls ...'' ... will gently dim the lights and raise the curtain on the golden age of screen entertainment'. (Evening Chronicle, 1991)
