The Northumberland Communities website contains a range of learning resources, drawn from the holdings of the County Archives Service, reflecting Northumberland’ s Heritage.
It provides a starting point for understanding the development of communities within Northumberland and provides an introduction to the range of resources available through the Archives service. The material focuses on 76 key communities, including rural market towns, small ports, towns which have developed in response to the growth and decline of the mining industry, a new town and both rural and urban villages. Original source material includes early maps; plans of significant buildings; extracts from directories; church records; court records; photographs; and oral history recordings.

Each of the County Records Offices, which are located currently at Gosforth, Morpeth and Berwick-Upon-Tweed, has a public searchroom where visitors can consult records and we also offer a postal research service for those unable to visit us. High quality copies of most documents held in our custody can be supplied through our reprographic service. The Gosforth and Morpeth offices are due to transfer to a new purpose built centre in Ashington in 2006.
