Scores on the Doors

Scores on the Doors Logo - NewLook up the hygiene star rating for food businesses in Newcastle

Visit our pages at Scores on the Doors

The Scores on the Doors scheme allows members of the public to see the results of the last food hygiene inspection in the form of a hygiene star rating.

Currently under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 the public have the right to request information on inspections of all food premises within the city council area and access to any reports that were sent. The scheme allows residents to see the information they were legally entitled to receive in a manner which is easy to understand.

We hope the scheme will drive up standards of food safety within premises and give the public the opportunity to make an informed choice about where they choose to eat or buy food based on food safety and hygiene standards. They also have access to information they are legally entitled to receive in an easy to understand format.

The star rating is based on the scores for hygiene, structure and confidence in management, because they are under the direct control of the food business operator.

The better the standards of food safety the higher the number of stars given. This will range from 5 stars (excellent) to no stars (very poor)

Right to Reply

A right of reply is available on the website. This allows the food business operator to tell people about the improvements they have made following the last star rating visit. All comments will be vetted before they are placed on the website.

Appeals Procedure

Where a food business believes that an inspection has resulted in an unfair rating of the hygiene standards, an appeal can be made in writing. This should be made within 2 weeks of receiving written notification of the star rating awarded to the Safety food and Health Improvement Group Manager, Public Health and Environmental Protection Division, Newcastle City Council , Civic Centre, Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8PB stating the reasons for the appeal. This will be given careful consideration and a response made in writing within 2 weeks.

If the food business operator is still unhappy with the final decision of the Department they may access the existing Council corporate complaints process.
