This section outlines what is happening in the areas shaded orange on the map
- New quayside promenade and Pedestrianisation Zone on Side/Sandhill provides expansion of pedestrian areas, improved facilities and priority bus links.
- Stops in the vicinity of Guildhall
- Traffic signals at the Guildhall provide bus priority measures
Along the Quayside itself the service runs in a specially constructed pathway between the riverside promenade and the vehicular carriageway. When using this single lane pathway, which operates two way with passing places, the speed of vehicles will be automatically controlled to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
Both services use Side and Sandhill to reach the Guildhall, before separating to serve their respective sides of the River Tyne. The provision of more direct access to and from the Swing Bridge through the introduction of new junction arrangements is currently being proposed. Traffic arrangements at Newcastle Quayside have been modified with the aim of providing high levels of priority for the new Quaylink buses. This has involved the removal of the Guildhall roundabout and the introduction of a Pedestrian Zone on Side.
